Squash Development

Development events are a fantastic way to bring surrounding clubs together and an important first step, providing juniors the opportunity to take part in competition within a non-pressure environment. And with such an array of talent and ability from beginners to National squad players it is a chance for the new players to watch some great squash showing them what they can achieve with a bit of time and effort.

But the events go far further than the squash, it brings juniors together from different clubs and throughout the day you can see the bonds forging into lasting friendships FANTASTIC!!

They ran 3 categories A-B-and C the A category had a field of 8 players, start to finish the crowd were treated to fantastic squash with hard fought matches, all the players in group A attend Squash Wales academy or National squad . Worth a mention in this group is Olivia Stephens who volunteered to stepped up to make the group of 8 Well done Olivia!!

A fitting way to end this event was to present Carmarthen Squash Club with their club Silver Charter award, the scheme is run by the governing body Wales Squash and the charter awards play an important role in recognising good practice within clubs, to achieve the awards clubs have to be running good policies and procedures for both adults and juniors, these include coach insurance all personnel in direct contact with children or vulnerable adults must be DBS checked and undergone a safe guarding of children and vulnerable adults course, they must provide coaching and opportunities for competition for both adults and juniors alike.

As with many squash clubs playing within leisure centre facilities, the club has been working in partnership with Carmarthen Leisure Centre to offer coaching and playing opportunities for both juniors and adults, this is a win win situation for both parties, the clubs provide qualified coaches to run the sessions whilst the leisure centre can offer these sessions to their members and general public, the biggest benefit for the club is it helps maintain the sustainability of both the club and sport.

The award was presented to Carmarthen’s head Coach Jenny Jones who has been instrumental in moving the club forward and ensuring the club is up to date with all new policies.

West Wales Development Officer Pete Crook. Presented the Award.

So well done to all players that entered the event, there were some excellent matches on display, keep training and playing hard and enjoying your squash.

Thank you to Carmarthen Squash Club for hosting the event and to Jenny Jones, Nia Davies and Pete Crook for organizing and running the event, thank you to all parents and family members for bringing and supporting the juniors, we look forward to seeing you all at the next one…keep an eye on the Wales Squash twitter page for details of the next event.

And finally a special thank you to Gary Price Carmarthen Leisure and Carmarthen Leisure Centre staff for all their help and support, we are very fortunate to have such fantastic local authority support. Providing use of the courts and hall for activities such as Football, Basketball and Badminton for the juniors whilst waiting their squash matches.

If you have any questions or feedback about the event, please contact West Wales Development Officer Pete Crook at petercrook23@hotmail.com or 07809 236762.

Virtual Spin @ Carmarthen Leisure Centre

You can turn up, get on your chosen bike and be guided through the different terrains following and discovering the eye-catching landscapes on the screen.

Whilst winding down the many roads, paths and tracks you will be challenged through interval and endurance training methods which will be sure to make you work hard and rewarded with rest periods at some of the country’s most beautiful landmarks.

Travel across New Zealand or Canada on a quest to boost your cardio vascular fitness and lower body conditioning. What does this mean for the PAYG and the members, it means more variety and it means that you can spin virtually any time the club is open outside the teacher based Cycling classes.

The remarkable trails are accessible to individuals of all fitness abilities and are sure to give each and every one of you a challenge that you will be keen to try again.

You will be guided through the whole workout experience and leave with a great sense of achievement after a wonderful session!

We need you!

Are you over 16?

Do you want to be part of a team that teaches over 2500 children to swim within the County?

Aquatics form a vital part of our junior activities and with the introduction of Splash to our Learn to Swim Programme we are bringing swimming to the under 4’s.

The introduction of assistants in the water during these sessions has opened a new pathway for those looking for a career in leisure and those who are looking for challenging volunteer options as part of their education.

Steffan who has been an integral part of Splash since we first introduced it to our programme says “Being an assistant is so rewarding – you can have such a positive impact on the children, and being part of their development is so fulfilling”

We are looking for enthusiastic, friendly and dedicated individuals to join our team – Do you have what it takes?
